Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A. I live in Clarksville, Tennessee, which overall is mostly country, except for the area where I live. For the most part my neighborhood consists of mostly African-Americans.

Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?

A. I have worn my hair natural all my life. At no point have I ever had a perm, not used a relaxer, or any chemicals in my hair. I had my own hair transition going from wearing loose natural hair, to wearing locs and my experiences with locs have been amazing.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. I received alot of support from my family when I got locs. It was really not a big deal for them, since almost everyone in my family has them. My family has always told me that I am beautiful and don't need to look like anyone else.

Q. In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?

A. It's truly wonderful to be able to say:

"Hey, this is me...
Everything about me is ( real )
These are my ( real ) eyes,
These are my ( real ) teeth,
This is my ( real ) hair,
and I am ( really ) gorgeous because of my realism!

Q. What is your weekly hair routine?

A. I wash and re-twist my locs every week. For styles, one week I will wear them straight - which isn't a favorite for me. Then during another week I will curl them, so they'll be crinkled, or crimped.

 

Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

A: I understand that going natural is not an easy decision. Keep in mind you don't have to complete the journey all at once. For example, you could slowly transition by simply eliminating relaxers. Now when the relaxer is completely grown out, you could try something different. Keeping in mind, if you have never worn your hair natural, that you will want to learn how to take care of it first by doing plenty of research.
