Business Spotlight - NappyStar.com

Tell us about your business and how and why did you start it?
Nappy Star is a social networking website for those with naturally kinky hair. The idea for this website sparked as I was browsing journals of nappturals on fotki.com. I saw how supportive they all were toward one another. I also saw how some members would advise each other to go to different websites in order to do different functions. I thought to myself "there should be a website where we can do everything in one place...just like Myspace.com!" We deserve it and the world needs to see how beautiful nappy is.

I purchased nappystar.com back in August of 2006. I would work on this website for hours at a time before I launched it and I still do. I know this might be wrong, but during the semester of 2006, I would cut class just to work on this website and whenever I did go to class, I would be drafting on more ideas for Nappy Star in my notebook. (Now, however, during semester of 2007, I taught myself how to not let Nappy Star conflict with my schooling because my schooling can help me better Nappy Star.)

I launched Nappy Star to the online public on February of 2007.

What does your business offer visitors?
My business provides one to be able to get their own profile, gallery, blog, guestbook, along with advice and inspiration for free. One can also browse through the hair galleries of other members, send and receive private messages and bulletins, and learn about the latest events in their area.

What do you love the most about being running your business?
What I love the most about running this business are the members who express how thankful they are to have this website. Not only did it show me that waking up out of my sleep to work on this website was well worth, it showed me that Nappy Star is serving it's purpose. I also love watching the website grow. I try my hardest to welcome ever newcomer personally.

What makes your business unique?
What makes my business unique is that it's the only for Myspace-type website nappturals.

How does your business positively contribute to the natural hair community?
My business positively contributes to the natural hair community by giving nappturals a quality website to hangout on.

Where are your goals for your business in the future?
I literally have a whole book dedicated to the things that I want for Nappy Star in the future. Among those things are the giving of both college and business grants. I also plan to open up a shop soon where one can buy clothing and accessories.

Overall, I hope that Nappy Star will contribute something positive in the movement that teaches nappturals how beautiful they are. I hope this website changes both mindsets and lives in a positive way someday.

Please feel free to write your own question, your final thoughts, or a shoutout here:I'd like to give a shoutout to God, Zee (daughter), the members of Nappy Star, all the other gorgeous nappturals of the world, and for anyone who has a dream that they're trying to make come true!
